Inventing Goddesses and Demons (Part Two)
CGG Weekly by David C. GrabbeIsaiah 34 prophesies God's judgment on Edom, a future desolation fulfilled around the time of Christ's return. At that point the angel from heaven will bind Satan and his demons in the bottomless pit. Edom's territory will stand empty except for the wild animals named in the chapter. The wilderness will not serve as a haunt for any demon named Lilith because Christ will have restrained all the demons. Verse 14 therefore describes a nocturnal animal rather than a night monster. Constraining interpretation to what the Bible itself states produces one unambiguous picture of judgment and restraint. Allowing myths or folklore to fill perceived gaps produces something entirely different and attaches to Scripture like a parasite that twists the meaning of God's Word. Such deviations lead to the false doctrine and heed for fables against which Paul warns in his letters to Timothy and Titus.
