Do You Really Know God?
Sermon by Clyde FinkleaIn the context of striving for salvation, Jesus teaches a profound truth about life and its preservation. He declares in Luke 17:33 that whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. This principle warns against the temptation to compromise one's faith for the sake of physical survival, as some did by conspiring against God's covenant in the time of Antiochus, possibly to save their lives. In the parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25, the foolish virgins, lacking oil, attempt to buy it at a critical moment, raising the question of whether they sought to save themselves by aligning with corrupt powers, perhaps even taking the mark of the beast as described in Revelation 13:16-17. Jesus admonishes in Matthew 25:13 to watch, for no one knows the day or hour of the Son of Man's coming, emphasizing the need for readiness over self-preservation. Through these teachings, He underscores that true life is found not in clinging to earthly existence, but in faithful endurance and obedience to God, even at the cost of one's physical life.

Motivation to Endure
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John O. ReidEach of us bears an individual responsibility to save our lives through perseverance, as Jesus Christ instructs in Luke 21:19, "By your patience possess your souls." This means that by enduring trials and sustaining afflictions, we preserve our lives. Christ emphasizes that we must not yield to calamities but bear up under them, for those who endure to the end will be saved. Difficult times are coming upon the earth, and He urges us to remain steadfast in truth during these challenges. In Luke 21:34-36, Christ warns us to guard against being weighed down by the cares of this life, lest that Day come upon us unexpectedly. We are to watch and pray always to be counted worthy to escape the coming trials and to stand before the Son of Man. Endurance is crucial, as God allows these events to unfold so mankind learns it cannot rule itself. Through perseverance, as noted in Matthew 24:13 and Mark 13:13, we are promised salvation if we endure to the end. Additionally, in Matthew 24:21-22, our steadfastness as the elect contributes to the shortening of the days of great tribulation, saving lives by God's intervention for our sake. God assures us in I Corinthians 10:13 that no temptation will overtake us beyond what we can bear, and He will provide a way of escape to endure it. All circumstances leading to trials are under His control, and He adapts them to our strengths, ensuring we can bear whatever comes upon us. Our endurance, therefore, is not just for personal salvation but aligns with God's purpose to build character and prepare us for His greater plan.
