The Glorification of Evil
CGG Weekly by David C. GrabbeHalloween, marking the sunset on October 31, is a glorification of evil, with Satan the Devil as its central figure, recognized or not. Described in the Bible as the ruler of this world and the deceiver of all, his influence permeates the celebration's focus on death and darkness. Evil, as the antithesis of the eternal life offered through knowing the Father and the Son, embodies malignancy and intentional harm, something purposefully injurious and unkind. It is not merely unpleasant but miserable by design, harming life or liveliness. Christians are urged to abstain from every form of evil, as it stands against life, especially eternal life. The rituals of Halloween, both ancient and modern, revel in trickery, sorcery, spiritism, and the dark ways of the evil one, promoting neither life nor the values Christians should uphold. Choosing between life and evil is essential, as they are mutually exclusive, and participating in such practices is incompatible with partaking in the Lord's table. Eschewing the evil of Halloween is a starting point, yet the greater challenge lies in combating the internal evil promoted by satan, which manifests in cutting words, deception, manipulation, and self-centeredness that wounds others. However, those in whom God dwells can overcome evil with good through the eternal life available in relationship with Him, a life of the highest quality, free from evil, as God lived it while human. Emulating the Life-giver means choosing life and condemning evil.
