Spiritual Gifts, an Overview

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Jesus Christ, as Head of the church, demonstrated the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in His chosen people on the day of Pentecost, empowering His disciples to perform mighty, wondrous acts in service to His purpose and their brethren. This occasion revealed a spiritual gift, speaking in tongues, enabling the apostles to communicate the gospel through recognizable languages and dialects to those gathered in Jerusalem, fulfilling their commission to be witnesses to Him to the end of the earth. In the first century, spiritual gifts were essential to the church's work, and the apostle Paul extensively instructed members about them, emphasizing that each of God's chosen people has received a gift through His Spirit, distributed individually as He wills. These gifts, termed charismata, are free, unmerited favors from God, manifesting as talents or abilities to accomplish spiritual aims, such as prophecy to proclaim God's Word, healings to restore physical health, leadership to galvanize action, and service to provide aid to others. Throughout Scripture, God bestowed various gifts for His specific purposes, enhancing natural talents or granting extraordinary abilities, as seen in Bezalel's craftsmanship, Moses' miracles, Joshua's strength, Samson's physical power, David's godly heart, Solomon's wisdom, Isaiah's prophetic speech, Jeremiah's courage, Ezekiel's implacability, and Daniel's understanding. These divine endowments, whether visible or hidden, are present and helpful in the church, ranging from prominent abilities like speaking or writing to quieter ones like organizing, praying, or bringing cheer to others. Whatever spiritual gifts God has graciously given, He desires that they be identified and used to the best of one's abilities in service to Him and His people, given freely as they have been freely received, without burying what has been entrusted.

The Holy Spirit: The Power of God

Sermon by Kim Myers

Brethren, the Holy Spirit is a profound gift from God, vital to our spiritual understanding and growth. It is not a third being or part of a trinity, but the very power and mind of God, poured out to us to enable comprehension of His laws, doctrines, and way of life. Through the Holy Spirit, God lives in us, shaping our character to produce the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, meekness, and self-control—against which there is no law. The Holy Spirit opens our minds to the mysteries of truth, granting wisdom and understanding essential for salvation. It intercedes for us in prayer, helping us express needs we may not even recognize, and comforts us in our struggles. This gift, given to those called by God, who repent, and are baptized, empowers us to change, to overcome sin, and to bear spiritual fruit, reflecting a sound mind. Moreover, the Holy Spirit leads us to eternal life, saving us from eternal death if we remain faithful and obedient to God's laws and doctrines. It is not something we are born with or can earn; it is bestowed upon us after baptism, initiating our transformation and understanding of God's way. As we yield to the Holy Spirit, it becomes the vine of God's divine nature, carrying out His will within us. Without the Holy Spirit, no one can fully come to God or grasp the whole truth of His Word. It is only through this divine power that we, as firstfruits called by God, can live under His rule and prepare for a place in His government. Let us cherish this awesome gift and ensure we are not confused about its nature or purpose, for it is crucial to our spiritual well-being and eternal destiny.
