God, Satan, and David's Numbering of Israel

'Prophecy Watch' by David C. Grabbe

The incident of King David's numbering of Israel reveals a complex spiritual interplay. According to I Chronicles 21:1-2, Satan moved David to conduct a census, while II Samuel 24:1 indicates that God instigated the numbering due to His anger against Israel. Both accounts suggest that God and Satan influenced David, with God provoking the action and Satan broadcasting the suggestion, though the emphasis differs between the two records. By itself, David's command to number Israel was not inherently wrong, as the nation had been numbered before and after this event, and the law provides specific instructions for conducting a census. However, neither II Samuel 24 nor I Chronicles 21 mentions the collection of the half-shekel ransom required during the census, an omission tied to the penalty of a plague, which God later chose as punishment. This irregularity in the census process appears to be a symptom of David's failure to consider God and His instructions, reflecting an underlying issue in his heart. The problem was not the census itself but David's motivation behind it. The results in II Samuel 24:9 describe the count as the number of valiant men who drew the sword, indicating a focus on military strength rather than trust in God. This suggests self-reliance, and possibly selfish ambition or presumption, as David may have been contemplating his own might and power instead of relying on God's Spirit. God's anger, already present, was tied to this provocation of David to number Israel, revealing the sin already in his heart. When God moved David to conduct the census, He did not cause him to sin but opened the way for the existing sin of self-reliance and neglect of God to be exposed. David himself admitted in II Samuel 24:10 that he had sinned greatly, recognizing that his thoughts and motivations were the root of the issue, not merely the act of numbering the people.

God, Satan, and David's Numbering of Israel

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

An apparent contradiction exists between I Chronicles 21:1 stating that Satan moved David to take the census while I Samuel 21:1 says that God did.

Numbers (Part Two): Graves in the Wilderness

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

If we, like Israel of old, choose to sin, we will receive the same consequence. Two thirds of the book of Numbers emphasizes that if we sin, we die.

The Faithfulness of God (Part Three)
