The Beauty of God's Law
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughGod's law defines sin with a clarity and purpose that reveals its inherent beauty, often unseen by the world. It serves as a tool provided by God, a series of instructions that delineate good behavior from bad, acting not as a force compelling sin but as a neutral standard that exposes it. As such, the law is holy, just, and good, guiding us toward righteousness and life when followed with the right spirit. It exists to explain what sin is, showing how humanity misses the mark of God's character and the image of Jesus Christ. For those who submit to God and adhere to His law, it becomes a path through sanctification to eternal life, demonstrating its positive and beneficial nature. However, for many, especially the unconverted, God's law appears as a curse rather than a blessing due to their carnality and sin. Human nature, inherently hostile to God, rebels against His instructions, driven by selfish desires and a refusal to submit or obey. This natural antagonism, compounded by a conditioned aversion from societal or doctrinal influences, blinds them to the law's beauty. They view it as obsolete or harsh, blaming it for their guilt rather than acknowledging their own sinfulness. Sin activates the law's automatic curses, revealing their wrongdoing, yet they deflect responsibility, seeing the law as the source of their troubles rather than their own actions. In contrast, God's law, when understood and kept through His Spirit, unveils its true purpose and beauty. It rules over all people throughout their lives, only losing its condemning hold through Christ's sacrifice and our acceptance of it, allowing us to live before God with His help. Far from being a burden, the law provides insight into our own nature, lights the path forward, and offers revival, strength, encouragement, hope, delight, liberty, good judgment, knowledge, and understanding. It is an expression of God's mind, leading to eternal life, and its beauty lies in its ability to produce communal harmony, abundant blessings, and the favor of God when obeyed.
