The Lord's Nourishing and Cherishing

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

In the context of marriage and spiritual relationships, nourishing embodies a profound responsibility and care, akin to how Christ tends to His church. Nourishing, as described, means to bring to maturity, providing for needs and guarding against dangers and neglect, much like a parent cares for a child. A good husband prioritizes his wife, ensuring her needs are met abundantly, placing her above even the children in his hierarchy of care, after God. This act of nourishing extends to providing physical necessities such as food, reflecting a tender concern for well-being. Christ, in a far greater way, nourishes His church by supplying spiritual food through His ministers and the inspired Word, ensuring constant growth and development. He is ever-present, never neglecting His bride, offering nourishment through daily engagement with Scripture and prayer. This ongoing process is not a one-time act but a continual provision, designed to perfect and build up the body of Christ until it reaches full maturity. Husbands are called to mirror this by nourishing their wives, providing for their physical and emotional needs with the same dedication. Christ's care includes opportunities for communal worship, where spiritual nourishment is found, emphasizing the importance of gathering together to be fed and to grow. This nourishing is an expression of His love, ensuring that all necessary provisions for life and godliness are available, leaving no excuse for spiritual weakness or underdevelopment.
