Be Kind
'Ready Answer' by James C. StoertzThe concept of withholding help is addressed with a critical perspective, highlighting the shortcomings of superficial kindness. The instruction to "Be nice. And you know what that means," often falls short of a truly virtuous approach to life, lacking the depth of godly kindness. True kindness, as opposed to mere niceness, must be freely given without expectation of repayment, reflecting a selfless attitude. When help is withheld due to personal cost or diminished well-being, it contradicts the teachings of Jesus Christ, who emphasizes giving without expecting anything in return, as seen in Luke 6:32-35. Godly kindness is a fruit of the Spirit, and joy in giving emerges when we submit to God in humility, ceasing to resist the call to help others. Hebrews 13:16 reinforces this by stating that God is well pleased with sacrifices of doing good and sharing, underscoring that withholding help for personal gain is not aligned with divine will.
Be a Good Neighbor
CGG Weekly by John ReissIn the Parable of the Good Samaritan, as recorded in Luke 10:30-37, Jesus illustrates the importance of not withholding help from those in need, regardless of their background. A traveler, stripped and wounded by thieves, was left half dead on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. Both a priest and a Levite saw him but passed by on the other side, withholding aid. However, a Samaritan, moved by compassion, stopped to help, bandaging the man's wounds, providing oil and wine, and ensuring his care at an inn with his own resources. Jesus emphasizes through this story that being a neighbor means showing mercy to anyone in need, not just those within one's own community. Jesus further teaches in Matthew 7:12 the Golden Rule, instructing us to do to others as we would have them do to us, reinforcing the principle of not withholding help. In Matthew 22:39, He defines the Second Great Commandment as loving our neighbor as ourselves, a foundation for not turning away from those who require assistance. Additionally, in Galatians 6:10, Paul urges us to do good to all as we have opportunity, while prioritizing the household of faith, indicating that help should not be withheld even from those outside our immediate circle when resources allow. Scripture also warns against withholding help when it is within our power to act, as seen in Proverbs 3:27 and James 4:17, encouraging us to seize opportunities to assist others. While our primary devotion is to God and Christ, and our brethren in the church take precedence, we are still charged to extend help to those who may become future brothers and sisters, reflecting the boundless love exemplified by our Savior.
Serving Others
