The Ten Commandments
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsThe spiritual law of God, much like the unyielding laws of the universe, is always in effect. When we keep His commandments, God blesses us; if we do not, we incur their penalty. The Ten Commandments have been in full force since creation and remain binding on us today, serving as the very code of conduct of our God. A commandment is a specific, eternal instruction from God that we are to obey. Law defines sin, and since sin has existed from the beginning with Adam, God must have given His law, including the Ten Commandments, as the basic law of His Kingdom. Abraham, the father of the faithful, kept the commandments, and David, a man after God's own heart, was deeply concerned with obeying them. Jesus Christ Himself kept the Ten Commandments and taught others to do likewise, declaring that if we want to enter eternal life, we must keep them. He elaborated on their depth, showing that even thoughts and intentions matter in obedience. The apostles also upheld the commandments in their teachings. Paul frequently mentioned them, summarizing the last six as how to love our neighbor, and affirming that breaking any commandment, whether showing love toward man or God, is sin. A sign of God's true church is the keeping of the Ten Commandments; a church that does not teach and keep them is not of God. Love does not nullify God's law, for by keeping the commandments, the love of God is perfected in us. Even in the future, when God's Kingdom is established and New Jerusalem descends, no lawbreaker will be allowed entry. Obedience to God's law remains the central issue, standing as the eternal standard reflecting the holy conduct of the Almighty.
