Souvenirs

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Souvenirs are objects kept as reminders of a person, place, or event. The French word derives from the Latin subvenire, meaning "to come to mind." While physical souvenirs are cheap trinkets whose value lies entirely in the memories they evoke, spiritual souvenirs are far more precious, as they lead to eternal life. The Hebrew word atzeret, translated "sacred assembly," describes two specific holy days: the last day of Unleavened Bread and the Eighth Day. It derives from the root atsar, containing ideas of stopping, closing, and retaining. God designates the Eighth Day as a sacred assembly so His people will retain the lessons learned during the Feast of Tabernacles, reflecting on what they heard and experienced before returning to the distractions of daily life. Retained knowledge must move beyond memory into action, producing genuine character growth. Deuteronomy, which God commanded Israel to read every seven years at the Feast of Tabernacles, contains eight key "remember" instructions offering spiritual souvenirs applicable today. God calls His people to remember their slavery to sin and that He alone delivered them. He urges them to recall His power over Pharaoh, so they need not fear any worldly opposition. He reminds them that He led and provided for them throughout forty years in the wilderness, and that He alone is the source of every blessing. He warns them to remember Israel's repeated rebelliousness, cautioning against spiritual complacency. He instructs them to remember Miriam's punishment for criticizing legitimate authority, calling for proper respect toward God-appointed leadership. He commands them to remember Amalek's treachery, staying vigilant against enemies who never change. Finally, He calls them to remember the days of old, trusting in a God whose character never changes. The Holy Spirit has been given specifically
