Pure in Heart

Sermon by Bill Onisick

The Lord actively searches and tests the hearts of His people, as declared in Jeremiah 17:10, where He states, "I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings." This searching is not a mere glance but a deep penetration, as the Hebrew word châqar (Strong's H2713) implies, meaning to penetrate and examine intimately. God holds up our heart, inspecting it from all angles against His holy standard to reveal where we fall short. As affirmed in I Samuel 16:7, while man looks at the outward appearance, the Lord looks at the heart. This intimate examination uncovers every thought and intent, as noted in I Chronicles 28:9, where David advises Solomon that the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. Nothing is hidden from Him; whether it is mental murder, lust, envy, covetousness, or idolatry, God sees it all. Revelation 2:23 reinforces this, with Jesus Christ proclaiming, "I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each of you according to your works." The heart, representing our inner thoughts, feelings, passions, desires, and intents, is the center of our intelligence, driving our will, character, and actions. Jeremiah 17:9 warns that the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, described by the Hebrew word mirmah (Strong's H4820) as fraudulent, crooked, and puffed up like leaven. It is frail and incurable, akin to a heart of stone, until God intervenes, as promised in Ezekiel 36:26, to give a new heart and spirit. Contrasting outcomes emerge based on the heart's focus. Jeremiah 17:5-6 describes the cursed state of a heart that trusts in man and departs from the Lord, likening it to a shrub in a barren desert. Conversely, Jeremiah 17:7-8 blesses the heart that trusts in the Lord, comparing it to a tree by the waters, unafraid of heat or drought, remaining green and fruitful. This illustrates the refreshing, regenerative spirit that fills a heart aligned with God's will through prayer and surrender. Proverbs 4:20-24 urges diligence in guarding the heart, for out of it spring the issues of life, emphasizing the need to keep God's words at its center. Matthew 12:34-35 further reveals that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks, with the Greek word perisseuma (Strong's 4051) indicating a superabundance that overflows. The heart, likened to a treasury or thêsauros (Strong's G2344), stores either good or evil treasure, influencing actions and words that impact others. Matthew 15:18-19 confirms that what proceeds from the heart defiles a man, listing evil thoughts and sins that originate there. Matthew 5:8 blesses the pure in heart, using the Greek word katharos (Strong's 2513) to mean clean and clear, reflecting a heart filled with God's Holy Spirit. I Timothy 1:5 states the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, while Hebrews 10:19-22 encourages drawing near to God with a true heart, cleansed by His pure water. Finally, I Peter 1:22 calls for fervent love from a pure heart, achieved through obedience to the truth. Revelation 22:1 envisions a pure river of life from God's throne, and John 7:38 promises that out of the believer's heart will flow rivers of living water, as Jesus Christ offers a fountain springing up to everlasting life in John 4:14.
