Christ commanded the apostles assembled with Him on the fortieth day not to depart from Jerusalem but to wait for the Promise of the Father, which they had heard from Him. He explained that John had baptized with water, yet they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days later. Although He had breathed on them after His resurrection and said, Receive the Holy Spirit, that act proved only a foretaste, for the full Promise still lay ahead. He had to ascend to the Father before the Comforter could be sent, fulfilling multiple prophecies that God would pour out His Spirit on many. Once the Holy Spirit came upon them, they would receive power to become witnesses of Him in Jerusalem, all Judea, Samaria, and to the end of the earth. That Spirit would impart spiritual knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, impel them toward holiness, and supply power, love, and a sound mind. Their witness would extend beyond spoken words to living in the image of Christ, offering a greater testimony than any message they proclaimed. On the fiftieth day the Promise was fulfilled when Jesus, exalted to the right hand of God, received the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured it out, as Peter declared on Pentecost. The dramatic events of that day demonstrated that God had made Jesus both Lord and Christ. The apostles later testified that the same Spirit had been given to those who obey God and that the Spirit itself served as a witness alongside them. Thus the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost directly resulted from Christ's ascension and enthronement, marking the commencement of the new manner of operation in which the Father and Son dwell with those who keep Their word.
