Psalm Genres (Part Seven): Trust
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughGod as Protector emerges as a central theme within the psalms of trust, where the psalmists affirm their confidence that He will guard and preserve His people amid trials. This portrayal develops through repeated declarations that God functions as keeper, shade, and defender, never slumbering or sleeping as He watches over Israel. The Hebrew term shamar, meaning to guard, watch, observe, protect, secure, preserve, care for, and cling to, appears six times in Psalm 121 alone, underscoring that divine protection encompasses every aspect of life from physical dangers such as stumbling on rugged paths or harm by sun and moon to moral and spiritual threats described as ra, or evil. These assurances connect directly to the covenant relationship in which God reproduces Himself by drawing humanity into His Family. Because He has spoken and proven faithful, the psalmist can declare that protection extends to the soul, or nephesh, and covers all activities from going out to coming in, from the present moment into eternity. Such imagery reinforces the broader message that trust constitutes the proper response to God's proven faithfulness; knowing His power and mercy belong to Him alone, the believer rests in the certainty that He will keep every promise to save, help, and guard those who adhere to the covenant. This positive outlook distinguishes psalms of trust from laments, as the psalmist counters visible threats with the reality of God's unchanging character and thereby encourages others to pour out their hearts before the One who alone provides refuge.
The Sons of Korah: Door Keepers
Sermon by Ted E. BowlingThe Lord God stands as a steadfast guard and protector over His people. In Psalm 121, His role as keeper is emphasized repeatedly with the Hebrew word shamar, meaning to guard, watch over, and preserve. He ensures that our foot will not be moved, for He who guards us does not slumber or sleep. The Lord is our shade at our right hand, protecting us from the sun by day and the moon by night. He guards us from all evil, watching over our souls and protecting our going out and coming in, from now and forevermore. As our ultimate shield, the Lord offers grace and glory, withholding no good thing from those who walk uprightly, as declared in Psalm 84. Blessed is the one who trusts in Him, for His protection is unwavering and His presence a constant refuge.
The Wall, Our Work
Sermonette byLike the nation of Judah under Nehemiah, we are building a spiritual wall of holiness, requiring a day-by-day effort to keep the world out and protect our families.
