The Secret Disciples

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus were both high-ranking Jewish leaders who initially approached Jesus in secret, becoming secret or stealth disciples.

Born Again or Begotten? (Part One)

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

John 3:3 highlights the profound importance of the born-again instruction through the very first of Jesus' discourses recorded by John. It is as if everything regarding our spiritual future begins and proceeds from this point. Interestingly, this discourse does not cover how men should live but focuses on how men are made alive spiritually.

Joseph of Arimathea

Article by Mike Ford

Nicodemus, a secret disciple and member of the Sanhedrin, assisted Joseph of Arimathea in the burial of Jesus Christ. He joined Joseph in the difficult task of taking down the lifeless body of Jesus from the stake. This same Nicodemus had previously come to Jesus by night, asking Him pointed questions and receiving direct answers in return.

Leadership and Covenants (Part Sixteen)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Nicodemus, a member of the Sanhedrin, the ruling group of the Jewish people in Jerusalem, held a position akin to a doctor of the law, consulted on spiritual issues. Despite his extensive theological knowledge, much of which was influenced by Jewish teachings and not entirely correct, he encountered Jesus for the first time in a significant exchange. Jesus told him that understanding His teachings required being born from above, a concept Nicodemus struggled to grasp, misinterpreting it as a physical rebirth. His admission of not understanding, despite his background, showed humility. Jesus emphasized that no one can come to Him unless drawn by the Father, indicating that divine revelation and grace are necessary for true comprehension and conversion. Nicodemus, though believing in a Creator God, had not yet reached the point of truly believing and submitting to God, a transformation that requires God's initiative and timing.

Born Again (Part 1)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Baptism and being born again were already understood by the Jews, but the traditions had evidently blinded people to some additional spiritual nuances.

The Trial of Jesus

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The trial of Jesus Christ had at least 17 illegalities, including corrupt judges, bogus witnesses, switching charges, changing venues, and intimidation.

We Are Unique!

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Our responsibility is to freely choose to follow the revelation God has given us, overcoming the baggage and resistance we have absorbed from the world.

Born Again or Begotten? (Part Three)

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

The concept of a spiritual birth has confused many. The Bible consistently compares Christians to already-born children or adults, not fetuses.

God Works In Marvelous Ways (Part Four)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

God's highest goal is not salvation, but sanctification into godly character, leading to membership in His family as co-rulers with Jesus Christ.

The Pharisees (Part 2)

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

God is less impressed in our rote compliance to a set of rules than thoughtful application of godly principles extending justice, mercy, and faith.

Jesus and the Feast (Part Two): Belief in the Spirit

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

On the last day of the Feast, Jesus proclaimed Himself as the One who will dispense God's Spirit, amplifying the promise He had made to the woman at the well.

Born Again (Part 2)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Things pertaining to the New Covenant can only be understood by those who have been circumcised in the heart, which equates to having been born again.

My House or God's?

'Prophecy Watch' by David C. Grabbe

In a revealing passage (John 7:53-8:1), the apostle John contrasts Jesus Christ to the Jews. God wants His people to prioritize Him above themselves.

Unleavened Bread and the Holy Spirit (Part Two)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Our exodus from the bondage of sin begins and ends with God. He commanded Israel to mark their escape with unleavened bread because of what He did.
