God's Simple Commands
Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)God presents His instructions and commands in simple terms that anyone with a normal mind can comprehend. For instance, He clearly instructed Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree in the middle of the garden, a straightforward command that they failed to obey. Sin, therefore, is not complex; it occurs when we do not do what God says we should do. Even though Adam and Eve saw God and knew He created them, they still did not believe Him enough to resist sinning. God also gave direct instructions to Israel before entering the Promised Land, commanding them to drive out the Canaanites completely—every man, woman, and child—warning that failure to do so would lead to their downfall. The simplicity of His commands underscores that sin results from not following what He instructs, a principle that remains clear and understandable.
The Ten Commandments
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsThe spiritual law of God, much like the unyielding laws of the universe, is always in effect, working at all times. When we keep it, God blesses us; if we do not, we bring its penalty upon ourselves. The Ten Commandments have been in full force since creation and are still binding on us today, serving as the very code of conduct of our God. A commandment is a specific instruction or law from God that we are to obey forever, establishing original, divine law without precedents. Law defines sin, and since sin has existed from the beginning with Adam, God must have given him His law, which included the Ten Commandments, the basic law of God's Kingdom. Thus, breaking any of them was sin even before the time of Moses. Abraham, the father of the faithful, kept the commandments, as did David, a man after God's own heart, who was deeply concerned about obeying them. Jesus Christ kept the Ten Commandments and taught others to do likewise, emphatically stating that if we want to enter into eternal life, we must keep the commandments. He elaborated on keeping them by deepening their application to our thoughts and intentions. The apostles also upheld the commandments in their teachings. Paul, apostle to the Gentiles, frequently mentioned them, summarizing the last six as how to love our neighbor, and indicating that violating any of the first four, which show love toward God, is equally sin. A sign of God's church is the keeping of the Ten Commandments, and a church that does not teach and keep them is not of God. Love does not nullify God's law; indeed, by keeping the commandments, the love of God is perfected in us. John, an apostle and close friend of Jesus Christ, emphasized that obedience to God's commandments is integral to love. Even after the Millennium, when New Jerusalem comes down, no lawbreaker will be allowed in the city, proving that the law of God, reflecting the holy conduct of the Almighty, will be the standard for all eternity.
