Developing a Mature Spiritual Appetite
'Ready Answer' by David F. MaasThe apostle Paul expressed frustration at the chronic dependency in congregations that should have shown maturity. To the Corinthians, he writes, I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are not able; for you are still carnal. He indicates that these congregations were not equipped to feed themselves, unable to discern the spiritual from the carnal. Many of us have seemingly lost our appetite for solid spiritual food, remaining dependent on spiritual milk instead of profiting from weightier matters. For those losing the capacity to enjoy solid food, there is a need to revitalize our spiritual appetite. The state of spiritual dependency described by Paul seems lamentable, as some have developed a baby-bird syndrome, waiting passively for nourishment rather than actively seeking it. If Sabbath services were the only times we were spiritually fed, we would eventually starve. Hopefully, most of us have passed the stage of the milk bottle and desperately need instruction on maintaining a balanced spiritual diet to sustain a healthy appetite.
