In Search of a Clear World View (Part Four)
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)The Greek term *aion* (G165), as found in certain scriptures, is a noun that carries significant depth in its application. Translated as "course" in the King James and New King James Versions, it can also mean "age" or a period of time in other contexts, indicating an unbroken duration. However, its meaning extends beyond mere length of time to focus on the events and characteristics within that period. *Aion* emphasizes the spiritual or moral qualities of a time rather than its duration, making it a vividly descriptive term. In usage, *aion* can be understood as a path or way, akin to a racecourse or a watercourse, detailing movement from one point to another through an ordered process. It reflects an accustomed procedure or chosen manner of conduct, highlighting the influence of the surrounding environment on one's actions and thoughts. Richard Trench, a noted authority on Greek word usages, defines *aion* as the floating mass of thoughts, opinions, maxims, speculations, hopes, impulses, aims, and aspirations current in the world, which forms a real and effective power, acting as a moral or immoral atmosphere that individuals constantly inhale and exhale, shaping their conduct and character. Johann Bengel describes *aion* as the subtle informing spirit of the world, representing the spirit of those living alienated from God. Kenneth Wuest contrasts *aion* with *cosmos*, noting that while *cosmos* depicts mankind's overall alienation from God throughout history, *aion* marks distinct periods or ages characterized by specific traits, suggesting that satan can customize influences to target individuals differently based on their unique experiences. Simply put, *aion* is akin to the German term *zeitgeist* or the English phrase "spirit of the times," representing an invisible power emanating from satan's system, intended to lead individuals away from loyalty to God through deceptive influences.
Who Is the 'God of This World'? (Part Two)
Sermonette by David C. GrabbeAs Moses had to veil his luminous face, so, metaphorically, the God of this age mercifully blinds carnal individual for now because light hurts their eyes.
Communication and Leaving Babylon (Part One)
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughIn Ephesians 2:2, Paul refers to the "course of this world," using the Greek word *aion* (G165), which typically indicates an age or an indefinite period of time, often extending to perpetuity. However, *aion* can also mean time viewed in relation to the events or characteristics that define that period. Beyond merely denoting a span of time, it can be understood as a place or context, as seen in Hebrews 5:6. This broader meaning suggests that *aion* encapsulates the spirit, disposition, or mindset of the world during a given era. It reflects the underlying tendencies, character, and nature of the world's system, influencing human conduct and thought. This spirit, tied to the course of the world, is what shapes the pervasive, deceptive order that stands in opposition to God's will, driving the behaviors and attitudes from which His people are called to separate.
Communication and Coming Out of Babylon (Part 2)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe word "aion" in Greek, often translated as "course," is crucial to understanding the pervasive influence of Satan on humanity. It represents a visible influence, akin to a path, riverbed, or highway, shaping the conduct and attitudes of the times. This "course" is a complex mix of elements that form the culture of any given people, varying across the world due to different factors, yet universally carnal, fleshly, and evil because it is driven by an evil spirit. The "course of the world" is not from God, but is instead modified by the world's disposition, character, nature, makeup, mindset, drift, perspective, slant, or frame of mind, all of which are influenced by the spirit who is the prince of the power of the air. This "course" is the unseen foundation of pre-conversion attitudes and conduct, continuing to motivate carnal actions even after conversion. It remains within, compressed like a spring, ready to manifest again. Every individual has been influenced by this spirit being, as billions throughout history have been deceived by Satan. The specifics of this impact differ from nation to nation, creating distinct national personalities, yet the underlying evil remains consistent. Conversion requires turning away from this "course of the world," which is rooted in the communication of evil from spirit beings to humanity, shaping hearts and minds in opposition to God's will.
