The Spirit of the Age, or zeitgeist, is a pervasive, often evil spiritual force shaping human attitudes and behaviors invisibly across cities and nations. It drives fear, confidence, or conformity, often exploited through media like radio and television by those in power to manipulate minds towards wickedness. Linked to the ruler of the kingdom of the air, this spirit rejects God's truth, pulling humanity towards sin and death. Unlike God's Holy Spirit, which offers purity and liberation, this spirit enslaves, as seen in historical atrocities and societal lies. Countering it requires embracing God's Spirit through prayer and His word, choosing holiness over the destructive influence of the world's spirit.

A Primer On Spirit

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

The concept of the Spirit of the Age, or zeitgeist, emerges as a pervasive and often dangerous spiritual influence that shapes human attitudes and decisions without individuals being aware of the manipulation. This invisible force, prevalent in a given period of history within a city or nation, impacts citizens on a large scale, motivating behaviors in specific directions, whether apprehensive, fearful, confident, or patriotic. It is a spirit of the times that is rarely good, reflecting the world's nature. This spiritual power is exploited by those in positions of commercial and political influence, particularly in the United States, Britain, and Europe, through electronic communication like radio and television. These mediums are widespread, easily accessible, and highly effective in spreading this spirit, which, if sourced from evil, can enslave minds to practice wickedness. The deliberate use of this power, seen in advertising and movie music to establish moods, manipulates inclinations on important issues to favor certain agendas, demonstrating the subtle yet potent danger of spiritual influence. Moreover, God has allowed satan to spread knowledge of this destructive spiritual reality to men of evil intent, often for controlling masses and bending them to a governing will. Historical examples, such as Adolf Hitler's entrapment of the German people, show how this spirit can lead to blind following and overlooking atrocities. In America, the belief that murdering the unborn is good illustrates spirit's power put to an evil end, driven by lies and repeated exaggerations that sway public opinion through carnal logic and social pressure. Counteracting this pervasive evil spirit requires a good, clean, pure, and honorable spirit. The difference lies in the holiness of God's Spirit, which stands in stark contrast to the unholy influence of satan's spirit. While both are invisible forces, God's Holy Spirit exudes purity, righteousness, and love, never aiming to enslave but to liberate and produce life on a divine level. The choice rests with individuals to resist the evil spirit and embrace the holy influence by spending time with God, imbibing Their essence through Their word and prayer, thus ensuring the spirit guiding them remains good.

The Holy Spirit and the Trinity (Part Two)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Mankind is surrounded by truth about God, yet there is a powerful impulse to pass over or outright reject it, often successfully. This rejection is influenced by a pervasive force, a spirit that shapes the inclinations and tendencies of the world. This spirit, described as the course of this world, embodies thoughts, deeds, pursuits, passions, and fashions that are alien to God's way, driving humanity toward sin and death. It operates invisibly, much like the wind, as an unseen force that motivates and activates behaviors and attitudes contrary to God's purpose. This same spirit is linked to the ruler of the kingdom of the air, indicating unseen principalities and powers that operate in the spiritual realm. These forces perpetuate an inclination, a mood, that rejects God's truth, making people virtually unable to resist without divine intervention. It is a spirit of the times, a cultural force that pulls individuals to conform to current trends, fashions, and values, often urging them to go with the flow rather than resist, even when the direction is contrary to what is right. This spirit can be seen in historical examples where large crowds, dramatic settings, and powerful influences create a collective mood that sways entire groups to follow destructive paths. Similarly, in everyday life, environments are crafted to generate specific spirits or moods that influence behavior, often leading individuals to yield to what is popular or feels good rather than what aligns with God's will. This pervasive spirit, originating from the adversary, infects humanity with an attitude inclined to destroy and fail, holding people in bondage unless replaced by the Spirit of God, which motivates toward joy, light, and selflessness.

Wind and God's Spirit

Sermon by Charles Whitaker

Wind, as a symbol in Scripture, carries a profound connection to the spirit, often reflecting the unseen forces that shape environments both physical and spiritual. Just as wind plays a major role in determining weather, influencing the atmosphere through unseen currents, so too does spirit shape the psychological and social environment, the zeitgeist or spirit of the age. Words, likened to breath disciplined by a spirit, hold immense power in creating this attitudinal environment. At a micro level, the words we speak can encourage or discourage, raise or sap spirits, transforming a wholesome atmosphere into one of despair or vice versa, depending on the intent of the spirit that forms them. On a macro scale, words can define the character of entire nations, inspiring hope or fostering darkness through the spirit that gives them voice. Thus, spirit, like wind, operates invisibly yet potently, crafting the emotional and social milieu in which we live, reflecting the unseen influence of God's Spirit or other spiritual forces at work in the world.
