The Appointed Time for Israel

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Clyde Finklea

In Daniel 9, we find Daniel understanding that the seventy years of captivity for Judah under the Babylonians were nearly over, as the Medo-Persian empire had defeated Babylon and set up Darius as king over the city under Cyrus, king of Persia. In his fervent prayer, recorded in this chapter, Daniel pleads for the restoration of Israel and Jerusalem, acknowledging the appointed time for their return to the land as foretold by Jeremiah. His prayer reflects a deep yearning for God's mercy and forgiveness toward His people. God's response to Daniel's prayer reveals an appointed time for Israel, encompassing a prophecy of seventy weeks determined for the nation and the holy city. This prophecy outlines six purposes that God intends to fulfill for Israel: first, to put an end to rebellion, bringing an end to outright defiance against His known law; second, to make an end of sins, addressing the falling short and missing the mark of His standards; third, to make reconciliation for iniquity, healing the break between man and God through forgiveness; fourth, to bring in everlasting righteousness, which will spring forth from Israel to all the world; fifth, to seal up the prophetic vision, fulfilling the restoration of Israel and Jerusalem; and sixth, to anoint a Most Holy place, signifying the sanctuary and temple in Jerusalem where God's throne will reside. Through these actions, God will restore Israel to be the holy and righteous nation He intended from the beginning, pouring out His Spirit on the whole house of Israel and ushering in righteousness through the Family of God.
