The Day of Israel's Calamity

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The day of Israel's calamity looms as a grave warning. God declares in Proverbs 1:26 that He will laugh at the calamity of those who ignore His counsel, mocking when fear overtakes them. The nation has strayed far from righteousness, behaving as if there are no consequences to its actions, living spiritually, morally, and ethically without regard for the future. Yet, the day of reckoning approaches, a time when powerful punishments will descend upon those who have scoffed at His warnings. When they call out in their distress, He will not answer, leaving them to face the painful awareness of their sins. This calamity is not merely individual but national, as seen in the collective portrayal of Israel. In Deuteronomy 32, Moses foresaw a devastating calamity for Israel, a scattering among nations so severe that their true identity would be lost. A worse calamity is yet to come, one of greater destruction and abasement for the Israelitish people, though it will ultimately lead to repentance and understanding through God's mercy. The song of Moses contrasts God's unchanging faithfulness with Israel's fickleness, revealing that national calamities are rooted in moral and spiritual departure from the relationship He established. In Amos, God delivers judgments against Gentile nations as a warning to Israel, showing what will happen if they do not repent. Though Israel and Judah did not heed these warnings in the past, and it seems they will not now, devastating social and cultural calamities are already impacting the Israelitish countries. The destruction of the family stands as a primary calamity, undermining the nation's strength through a cancerous immorality. Wars, feminism, materialism, homosexuality, easy divorce, abortion, and euthanasia, alongside entertainment and religion's abandonment of God's instructions, contribute to this moral decay, tearing apart the fabric of society. Ezekiel's prophecies, directed to Israel long after their initial captivity, speak to a time of final collapse just before Christ's return. The vivid depictions of violence and crime, where the blood of one crime touches another, reflect the internal war within the nation—husbands and wives, friends and families turning against each other. These warnings, echoed across prophets like Jeremiah, show a nation breaking down under the weight of its own sin, facing imminent punishment for turning away from the opportunities God provided to live according to His way.

Power

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

In His mercy, God always warns His people of coming calamity, either through His prophets or through escalating disasters that lead to His ultimate judgment. Through Amos, God is warning our nations that devastating calamities lie just ahead, though escape from them remains possible. God was very busy sending famines, droughts, blights, locusts, epidemics, warfare, and possibly earthquakes in judgment for unrighteousness, hoping that minor warnings would be heeded before a foreign nation would plunder and take captive. Rain fell unevenly, sometimes too much causing floods, and other times just enough to deceive the people into a false hope. Even significant events have not crippled us, and we fail to take these warnings for what they are. We have become so far removed from God that we lack the eyes to see and the ears to hear the warnings He sends, interpreting them as mere natural events.

September 11 One Year On

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

God declares in Amos 3:2 that He holds America accountable for its iniquities, as a nation claiming closeness to Him. He questions in Amos 3:6, if calamity strikes a city, is it not true that the LORD has done it? Indeed, among a people professing nearness to God, disaster is not random. God allows calamity to occur as a call to repentance and a revival of true worship. In Amos 4:6-12, He lists examples like famine, drought, crop failure, epidemics, and natural disasters as divine wake-up calls, lamenting that the people have not returned to Him despite these events. The call remains clear in Amos 5:6 to seek good and not evil, so that the LORD God of hosts may be with those who heed His warning.
