Helel, also called Lucifer in the King James Version, was an anointed cherub covering the throne of God. His Hebrew name means brightness or shining one. Created to praise and glorify God, he became boastful and attempted to overthrow Him and set up his own throne. This led God to cast him back to the earth and rename him Satan. Lucifer is a Latin term meaning light bringer but is not an accurate translation and carries pagan connotations. Helel would be better, as his name now is Satan.

Behind Enemy Lines: Lucifer, Helel, and Satan

Sermonette by Clyde Finklea

Helel, originally an anointed cherub, rebelled against God and was cast back to Earth. God renamed him Satan, which means adversary, reflecting his opposition to God, believers, and all that is good. Satan is also known as the devil, meaning slanderer or defamer, and is described as the great red dragon, emphasizing his power, murderous nature, and cruelty. He is referred to as the serpent of old, highlighting his craftiness and deceptive nature, and the evil one, indicating his active and malignant evil. Satan is the prince of the power of the air, leading the demonic host to spread deception and temptation. He continuously works to energize disobedience in mankind. Despite his many names and deceptive methods, Satan is a defeated foe whose days are numbered, as God will soon crush him under the feet of believers.

Behind Enemy Lines (Part One)

CGG Weekly by Clyde Finklea

Heylel, also known as Lucifer in the King James Version, was an anointed cherub who rebelled against God. Originally, he was one of two cherubs whose wings covered the throne of God. Heylel's fall from his exalted position occurred when he attempted to overthrow the Almighty and set up his own throne in God's place, as recorded in Isaiah 14:12-14. The Hebrew word heylel, from which Lucifer is derived, is used only once in the Bible and is linked to the root word halal, meaning praise, glory, and boast. Heylel was created to praise and glorify God but became boastful, seeking praise and glory for himself. Consequently, God cast him back to the earth and renamed him Satan, reflecting his true nature as the adversary of God and all who stand with Him.

The Satanic Surge

'WorldWatch' by Joseph B. Baity

In the midst of satan going mainstream and being seen as admirable, cultivated, and even cool, the hit television show Lucifer on the Fox network, recently renewed for its third season, depicts him as a devilishly attractive and intelligent being who has abandoned his throne in hell and retired to Los Angeles to pursue his favorite indulgences of wine, women, and song. However, in the midst of his new life, he begins to develop feelings of compassion and empathy that motivate him to reach out with his unique brand of assistance to the LA police department. Beyond Lucifer, a cursory glance at the daily offerings of entertainment on television or at the movies reveals an untold number of shows portraying some semblance of the demonic world in an exciting and fun fashion.

Did God Create a Devil?

Herbert W. Armstrong Booklet

Lucifer was a created being who sealed up the sum of wisdom and was perfect in beauty. He had been in Eden the garden of God and was upon the holy mountain of God. God set him as the anointed cherub that covereth and placed him on a throne to administer the government of God over the angels on earth. From the day he was created he lived a perfect life until iniquity was found in him. He became proud and his heart was lifted up because of his beauty. He said in his heart that he would ascend into heaven and exalt his throne above the stars of God. He would ascend above the heights of the clouds and be like the most High. Lucifer led a third of the angels in rebellion against the government of God. This sin caused the earth to become chaotic and in confusion. God did not create a devil. Lucifer transformed himself into an adversary by this rebellion. He is no longer a light bringer but now rules as the god of this world.

Remember When

Sermonette by Clyde Finklea

God wants us to remember when we were called out of bondage into virtue, when He gave us the power of His Holy Spirit to do what ancient Israel could not.

The Adversary

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Lucifer is a Latin word and not a very good translation of the Hebrew word here. His name was Helel. It means brightness or bright one or shining one. Lucifer means light bringer or light bearer. The translators needed a proper name and so they used the Latin term. They did not translate it straight as brightness or Helel. Lucifer has pagan connotations in Latin and Roman mythology. The name Lucifer could change the approach to him. He should not be called Lucifer now because he is not a light bringer. He is not a shining one in terms of God's glory. That was his name then and should only be properly applied to him before his fall. Helel would be better. His name now is Satan.
