The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Walking on the Water (Part One)
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsChrist's miracle of walking on the water occurred soon after feeding the 5,000. Later, Jesus told His disciples to set out in their boat for the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. At three hours after midnight, straining at the oars against a storm, they were still only halfway across the lake, tossed by waves in a contrary wind. Unaware that Jesus knew of their struggle, they were about to witness His sympathy and readiness to help. He approached them in an unexpected way, walking on the turbulent sea as if it were solid ground. Though He had been praying for and watching over them from the mountain, they did not recognize Him in the pitch-black storm, their nerves frayed with fear. Mistaking Him for a spirit, they were terrified until He reassured them with familiar words: Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.
The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Walking On Water (Part Two)
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsThe miracle of Jesus walking on the water reveals His direct control over natural law. His action defied the known laws of gravity and the properties of liquid water, not by changing or suspending these universal laws, but by exercising a stronger power. As the Creator of seas and winds, He demonstrated His authority over them, using them as He desired. It was His will that bore Him triumphantly above the waters that stormy night. During this event, Peter, seeking a sign that the figure was truly Jesus, received the command to come. Initially, Peter's confidence in Jesus' power sustained him as he walked on the water, but doubt soon crept in, diminishing his spiritual experience. Jesus gently rebuked him, asking, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" while extending a hand to reassure him. As Peter's impulsive faith clashed with fear, focusing on the raging waves instead of his Savior, he began to sink, yet Jesus saved him, never abandoning His own. Once Jesus and Peter entered the ship, the winds immediately ceased, having been overcome by supernatural power, and the ship was instantly moved to the shore. The disciples, witnessing this miracle, were greatly amazed and marveled, yet they did not fully understand due to their hardened hearts. Their minds were slow to recognize the significance of Jesus' power, even after the earlier miracle of the loaves and fish. Their struggle with faith versus fear, compounded by hard-heartedness, hindered their ability to grasp His divine nature. However, as the excitement of the raging sea settled, they gained a greater appreciation for His power, leading them to worship Him and declare, "Truly You are the Son of God."
