Whose Family Values?
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughValues are defined as principles or qualities intrinsically beneficial or desirable, such as standards, mores, norms, moral codes, customs, or ideals. They serve as the guides by which people conduct their lives. Family values are those same guides, norms, and practices applied within the most intimate community of the family. They hold grave importance because they largely determine how individuals act and react in larger communities such as neighborhoods, schools, cities, states, and nations, and because character is formed around them. The absence of national consensus about family values produces moral confusion that prevents agreement on the qualities society should hold dear. This division surfaces in political campaigns, media conflicts, and public scandals involving figures who promote or tolerate single parenthood, adultery, homosexuality, and other practices that depart from the traditional American and biblical model of marriage. Such confusion arises from atypical cultural circles that reinforce one another's behavior while ignoring evidence that children reared in traditional families with a father as breadwinner and a mother preparing her children for adulthood enjoy far greater success than those reared in any other format. When the family breaks down, society follows, as virtually every social scientist agrees. History demonstrates that differing values repeatedly bring people into conflict, resulting in divorce within families, violence in communities, and wars between nations in which the victor imposes its values on the defeated. As immigration, rapid transportation, instant communication, higher criticism of the Bible, and diminished church influence have diversified the population, the range of available values has widened and national consensus has become impossible. In the last days perilous times will come, marked by men who are lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, and unholy. The good news is that Jesus Christ will return to establish the government of God on earth, beginning with Israel. The values of the God Family will then be imposed authoritatively yet not rigidly dictatorial, ending all competition from differing codes and lifting the burden of clashing values so that the whole earth can rejoice in the restitution of God's family values.

The First Commandment (1997)
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughChristians must prioritize their values to ensure nothing comes between them and God. Loyalty to Christ is paramount, and any divided allegiance to other persons or things constitutes idolatry, shaping character contrary to the image of Christ. Obedience to God over men is a constant principle, as life's compulsions pressure us to choose between good and evil, often leading us into idolatry to satisfy desires for acceptance and security. The source of law and morality reveals the god of any system, and when human relativism replaces divine absolutes, society absorbs values that disregard God, leading to widespread immorality. Worship, involving intense admiration and devotion, must be directed solely to God, impacting every facet of life with fear, service, and obedience to Him as Creator. The values and system of morality determining right from wrong must change fundamentally to align with God's purpose, ensuring we emulate Him and not another, to be in His image and worthy of His Kingdom. Loyalty to the Creator, who continues His creative work in us, is essential to form holy, righteous character, and we must submit joyfully to Him who is worthy of all devotion.
