Elements of Motivation (Part Six)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Sin is described in the Bible as a malignant and dynamic power that grips humanity, enslaving individuals and permeating every fiber of their being. It is not merely an external force but an internal, living influence inspired by a malevolent entity, actively working to deceive and control. The term for lawlessness, *anomia* (G458), provides a deeper understanding of sin as ignoring God's rules entirely, as if no laws exist. This interpretation reveals sin as a complete rejection of divine standards, presenting it as a pervasive and destructive force that opposes God's will and purpose. Overcoming this powerful enemy is essential to be counted worthy of walking in white and entering the Kingdom of God, as it requires a fierce battle against the deceitful and persistent nature of sin within us.

What Restrains the Man of Sin?

'Prophecy Watch' by Charles Whitaker

In II Thessalonians 2, the apostle Paul speaks of a force that temporarily restrains the coming of the man of sin, also termed the lawless man. This restraining force, described as neuter in the Greek of verse 6, is not a person but an undefined influence that maintains the status quo. As this force diminishes, new attitudes, unexpected behaviors, and unwelcome norms emerge, leading to a culture where excesses become the rule and extremes are normalized, reflecting a state of lawlessness or *anomia* (G458).

Sin Is Spiritual!

'Ready Answer' by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Sin, defined as *hamartia* in I John 3:4, is equated with *anomia*, which is rendered as lawlessness or the transgression of the law in various translations. The Greek term *anomia* literally means being without law, and this concept is central to understanding sin as a failure to adhere to God's established standards. As expressed, whoever commits *hamartia* also commits *anomia*, highlighting that sin is fundamentally a state of lawlessness. God's role as both Lawgiver and Judge is implied, for He will evaluate each person according to the standards of His law. No matter how sin is categorized, whether as lawlessness, transgression, evil, or iniquity, it remains a deviation from God's code, with the ultimate remedy being the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
