The Power of the Holy People

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

The power of the holy people is the Holy Spirit, the essence of God's mind and the agency by which the Father and the Son live in the begotten Christian. Joining Daniel 12:7 with II Timothy 1:7 shows that the church's power is ultimately God Himself, the Source of that Spirit, and Jesus affirms that all power in heaven and on earth has been given to Him (Matthew 28:18). Limiting this power to the ability to preach publicly limits God, since His work centers on true belief (John 6:29), beginning with the Spirit's prodding and ending with the regenerated Christian inheriting the Kingdom. That work transforms sinful humans into spirit-composed members of the God Family, and the power behind it is God working through His Spirit. Because that power is Jesus Christ living in believers, it can never be completely shattered, or the gates of the grave would prevail and God's purpose would fail. The church may lose an open door to preach, and the set-apart peoples of Israel are prophesied to fall, but the New Covenant church's power remains unbroken. Daniel 12:7's shattered holy people more likely represent the nations of Israel, so God's power is not in view there. Treating the church's power as shatterable reflects a humanist outlook that bases importance on corruptible human action rather than on the unassailable Head of the church, and such thinking may have contributed to the church's scattering. Believers can and must trust that Christ will lead and sustain His church.
