God Always Defaults in Mercy

Sermon by Clyde Finklea

Our God always defaults in mercy, a trait deeply embedded in His nature. When He looks at suffering people, He feels compassion toward them and their needs, and this compassion always precedes mercy. The word often translated as mercy in the Bible conveys a strong feeling of pity, sympathy, compassion, and affection, sometimes rendered as lovingkindness. This lovingkindness reflects an emotional connection that moves Him to action, providing relief from distress through compassionate treatment and forbearance. God's love intertwines with His grace and mercy, inseparable aspects of His character. His mercy is evident in actions, such as forgiving an immense debt of sin that could never be repaid, as illustrated in the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant. There, the master, moved with compassion, released the servant and forgave the debt, demonstrating mercy by holding back deserved punishment. God's mercy restrains Him from giving us what our sins deserve, showing His faithfulness as He offers new mercies every morning. His lovingkindness is a constant presence, ensuring that we are not consumed by judgment, as His desire is to bring everyone to repentance. He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked but seeks their turning to Him. At the very bottom of His heart lives mercy, a foundation that sustains His relationship with humanity. His mercy is an expression of His love, encouraging us to grow in compassion and to show the same tender feelings toward others in their misery, forgiving them as we have been forgiven.

Psalm Genres (Part Five): Psalms of Praise

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The psalms of praise in the book of Psalms extol God for His character, particularly His hesed, often translated as lovingkindness, mercy, steadfast love, or unfailing love. This term appears 127 times in the Psalms, underscoring its significance. Hesed is a covenantal term, reflecting the love, kindness, grace, and mercy that God has bound Himself to give through His covenant with His people. It signifies that God has obligated Himself to fulfill His promises, not merely out of His nature, but because He has entered into a solemn agreement with us. In Psalm 33:5, it is written that He loves righteousness and justice, and the earth is full of His goodness, which is His hesed, His covenant love expressed in good responses toward us. Psalm 98:2 declares that the Lord has made known His salvation and openly shown His righteousness to all nations, revealing His covenantal love through the deliverance He provides. In Psalm 23:6, His mercy, again hesed, is paralleled with goodness, showing that His mercy is good and His goodness is merciful, following His people all the days of their lives. Psalm 85:7 pleads for God to show His mercy and grant salvation, linking hesed with salvation as part of His covenant obligation. Further, in various psalms, hesed is paralleled with faithfulness, righteousness, and truth, indicating that God's covenant love is reliable, loyal, and trustworthy. The psalmists recognize that unlike the capricious gods of other nations, our God is consistent, faithful, and true to His promises. His lovingkindness is a foundation for trust, allowing His people to rely on Him and act in faith, knowing He will fulfill what He has pledged. This steadfast character of God, embodied in His hesed, inspires continuous praise, as it assures us that He will always act for our ultimate good according to His covenant.
