The Stones of the Jordan

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Clyde Finklea

The crossing of the Jordan River took place at Bethabara beyond the Jordan. This location was the ford where the children of Israel crossed under Joshua after wandering in the wilderness for forty years. The priests bearing the ark of the covenant stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan while all Israel crossed over on dry ground opposite Jericho. Twelve stones were taken from the place where the feet of the priests stood firm in the midst of the Jordan. These stones were carried over and set up at the lodging place in Gilgal as a memorial to the children of Israel. A second set of twelve stones was placed by Joshua in the midst of the Jordan at the location where the priests stood. The people crossed at the time of harvest when the Jordan overflows its banks. The waters were cut off upstream at Adam when the feet of the priests dipped in the edge of the water. Bethabara was the same place where John the Baptist later baptized.
