Deuteronomy (Part 4)
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe Christian who speeds at 75 mph when the law says 65 may feel safe, but this action reflects a lack of respect for God. God is aware of the Christian's attitude toward law, seeing it as an indicator of their heart's disposition when they believe no one is watching. Obeying speed limits and other laws is not just about following human ordinances; it is about showing respect for God and His commandments. By adhering to the speed limit, Christians demonstrate their awareness of God's presence and their desire to honor Him, even when they might feel safe breaking the law.
Love's Importance and Source
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe law, of and by itself, does not provide enough motivation for people to obey it. An example of this is the 55-mile per hour speed limit on freeways and interstates. Most people will exceed this speed limit when the roads are not crowded, thinking, "The way is open and clear. Why don't I just go faster?" However, upon spotting a patrol car, they will immediately slow down to the legal speed limit. This behavior shows that it is not the law itself, but the fear of the government's power to enforce it, that motivates compliance. Once the patrol car is out of sight, people often resume speeding, demonstrating that the law's power alone is insufficient to motivate adherence when no one is watching.

The Fruit of the Spirit: Love
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughLove is the supreme quality that enables a group's members to maintain unity and keep it from disintegrating. This is achieved by each person constraining or restraining himself to act in love. It takes a strong person to resist what comes naturally and do what God commands rather than go along with the urges of carnal feelings. Love, as an action, is expressed through obedience to God's commands, reflecting the very nature of God who cannot sin. Commands are given in love, producing right and good results, and obedience to them is the proof of love. Love is not merely a feeling or preference but an action that submits to God's principles and examples. Even when shown coldly or reluctantly, love as dutiful obedience is better than not acting at all, though the proper attitude and emotion are trained through experience and guided by God's Spirit. Godly love, empowered by the Spirit, is the supreme virtue, guiding us into truth and requiring us to choose to follow its guidance.
