God set the boundaries of the nations when He divided their inheritance and separated the sons of Adam according to the number of the children of Israel. This act demonstrates His sovereignty over every people, including non-Israelitish families, whom He has likewise moved and resettled at various periods according to His will. The same principle appears when it is stated that He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth and determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings. These statements establish that God has exercised similar control over Gentile nations as over Israel, settling populations where He chose and shifting them when it pleased Him. The recognition that God has done so for peoples outside Israel undercuts any claim that He uniquely established America as a Christian nation during its founding. Even if some settlers descended from Israel, their presence supplies no guarantee of Christian conduct, for ancient Israel itself never kept its covenant obligations in a manner that would render it God's obedient representative on earth. This understanding of divine boundary-setting connects directly to the distinction between the Kingdom of God and the kingdoms of this world. Because God alone appoints the times and borders of all nations, no earthly government can be identified with His Kingdom on the basis of its origins or professed beliefs. The requirement to seek first the Kingdom of God therefore remains separate from any national identity, and attempts to merge the two constitute a confusion of realms rather than a fulfillment of divine purpose.
