The Works of the Devil Destroyed
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsThe works of the devil encompass a pervasive and destructive influence on humanity and the world, rooted in deception and rebellion against God. The devil, originally a perfect archangel named helel, transformed into an adversary through pride and envy, becoming known as satan, meaning Adversary. His rebellion led a third of the angels to become demons, bringing chaos to a once-perfect earth through a titanic spiritual battle. His primary endeavor is to separate people from God, driven by jealousy of God's sovereignty and a desire to destroy God's glorious works on earth. Through lies and subtlety, he enticed the first humans to sin, establishing a kingdom of darkness that has dominated the world for nearly 6,000 years, enslaving humanity under his deceptive authority. The devil's methods have produced global suffering, manifesting in false teachers, wars, famines, pestilences, diseases, and persecution of God's people. His lies distort the truth about God's love, laws, and will, convincing people that God's ways are burdensome and leading them to reject divine commandments. He perverts human nature, instilling a preference for evil over good, resulting in misery, despair, and a world of anguish marked by corrupted religion, science, politics, and education. His influence drives the perversion of creation, instigating destructive practices motivated by pride and power. Ultimately, he seeks to murder humanity to prevent individuals from becoming part of God's family, knowing that they will surpass him in power when transformed into spirit beings. In the future, the devil's wrath will intensify, bringing untold suffering and death, especially targeting the true church with vengeance as he knows his time is short. He will orchestrate a final world government during the Great Tribulation, uniting nations for a climactic war against the returning Son of God at the Second Coming. Despite his efforts, his power is limited and already defeated, awaiting final judgment. For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Jesus Christ came to conquer this adversary and his kingdom, undoing his lies through His life, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection. He exposed the evil nature of sin, set captives free from satan's chains, and paid the penalty for sin to reconcile humanity to God. At His return, Christ will complete the destruction of the devil's works, banishing him and his cohorts, establishing God's Kingdom, and restoring order and peace on earth.
