Warfare!
Sermon by John O. ReidEven though our nation may seem at peace, those striving for the Kingdom of God are engaged in a total war, a spiritual warfare that demands we mobilize all we have to win the conflict before us. This battle requires us to overcome and stand fast as soldiers, resisting the snares of the world, which include the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. These traps are set to divert our focus from God's will, but those who resist these pulls and do His will shall abide forever. We face three formidable enemies in this spiritual war: the world, satan the devil, and our own flesh. Satan, filled with utter hatred for us, despises our potential to become members of the God Family and enter the Kingdom of God—a destiny he cannot achieve. As a deceiver, he has misled the world into believing that right character, love toward others, self-control, and fidelity are unimportant, while self-indulgence is right. He broadcasts dissatisfaction and self-justification, urging us to abandon the fight and return to old ways, much like enemy propaganda aimed to shatter resolve during wartime. Satan, once a covering cherub adorned with beauty and perfection, fell to pride and sin, losing all he had. Now, he envies us, whom God has called in our imperfection to be made perfect, fueling his hatred. He knows our weaknesses from his past influence over us and uses them as the accuser to trap us into sin. Alongside him, the world offers false wisdom and fleeting pleasures that lead to vanity, while our flesh wars against us with lingering desires and habits from before our calling. Yet, despite the odds stacked against us, this is a war we must win. Satan will not prevail, for we have the intent and power of God to save us, a power that cannot be thwarted by satan's schemes. God's strength is awesome; He is not feeble or powerless but fully able to defend and sustain us in our trials. His past performances assure us of His ability to deliver us from any problem. He gives power to the weak, renewing the strength of those who wait upon Him, enabling them to rise with vigor and endure any challenge. Our weapons in this spiritual warfare are not like those of the world or satan. Instead of lies, intimidation, or violence, our arsenal consists of God's teachings, designed to transform us into a new creation. We are to wrap ourselves in the armor of God, immersing ourselves completely in truth, righteousness, integrity, and holiness. Our feet are to be shod with the gospel of peace, proclaiming peace through the way we live, responding to evil with honesty and love, fulfilling the law through love for others. We wield the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, as our offensive weapon against satan's lies and deceptions. Constant prayer is essential to persevere and achieve victory alongside our fellow soldiers. Our battlefield is everywhere—in our homes, jobs, and relationships—where we must reflect God's teachings in all we do. Our objective is to defeat the true enemy by changing our human nature and building righteous character, aligning ourselves with the nature of God to end all war. This fight demands our full effort; we cannot sit idly by expecting Jesus Christ to handle it all. Like a disciplined warrior, we must train through prayer, study, meditation, fasting, loving and serving others, and obedience, drilling God's way of life into our being. We must plan our race, control our minds and bodies against temptations, and remain steadfast, knowing that God watches over us. Our goal is eternal life in the Kingdom of God, and we must fight with everything we have to overcome and achieve victory in this spiritual war.
Spiritual Minefields
Sermon by John O. ReidIn the perilous journey toward the Kingdom of God, we face a spiritual warfare akin to traversing a deadly minefield. Satan, the adversary, sets traps to confuse, wound, and destroy us, preventing our reach to the divine goal. These spiritual mines are not merely physical but are designed to inflict confusion, doubt, fear, resentment, severe wounding, and spiritual death. We must be vigilant to recognize these dangers, understand how to extricate ourselves if ensnared, and navigate safely to our sacred destination. One such minefield is the world around us, a deceptive landscape that appears alluring yet harbors destructive temptations. This society promotes self-centeredness, pleasure-seeking, and moral decay, weakening our spiritual resolve. It tempts with greed, the unlawful desire for more than needed, pulling us away from God through worldly pursuits and prestige. Other mines include escapes like alcohol, drugs, and illicit sex, each acting like a Claymor mine, devastating the individual and injuring those nearby with guilt, shame, and separation from God. Television and media also pose as subtle mines, lulling us into complacency while instilling wrong attitudes and desires. God commands us to come out of this world, to resist its pull, and to guard our homes as havens of peace against these pervasive influences. Within the church, Satan lays additional minefields through doctrinal differences, akin to a Bouncing Betty mine, exploding with dissension and scattering God's people through confusion over teachings and practices. Compromise, fear, complacency, and anger further threaten our unity and identity with God, producing fruits of disharmony and division rather than the love, peace, and unity that characterize God's nature. Satan's ultimate aim is to divert our focus from God, crumble our faith, and instill fear and frustration to make us abandon our course. When caught in a spiritual minefield, we must halt, call out to God for help, admit our missteps, and carefully retrace our path to safety. We must ask God daily for protection, diligently build on our calling with zeal, and maintain humility to avoid these traps. Jesus Christ, having navigated all minefields, offers the sure path through these dangers. By following in His steps, with His presence as our comfort and guide, we can overcome the trials ahead. God promises never to leave us, ensuring that if we remain faithful and humble, looking to Him, we will reach the Kingdom of God despite the adversary's schemes.

Spiritual Strongholds (Part One): Obedience
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsIn the spiritual realm, we are soldiers in God's army, engaged in a relentless war against numerous enemy strongholds that manifest in our land, within the church, and often within ourselves. These formidable barriers must be confronted using the divine strategies God has provided. We are to wage this war through prayer, the Word of God, faith, and by living according to His way of life as a witness to others. Our duty is to listen to God and obey Him faithfully until the very end. When we adhere to His commands with steadfast obedience, in God's appointed time, the walls of satan's strongholds will crumble. By the power of the Spirit of God, the fortresses of wrong thinking and behavior, evident in those who resist His authority, are torn down, paving the way for spiritual victory.

When the Trumpet Blows
Sermon by John O. ReidIn the context of biblical imagery and history, the sound of trumpets carries profound significance. For many, it evokes the longing to hear the trumpet that heralds the return of Jesus Christ, signaling the end of man's misguided rule influenced by satan, and the cessation of the pain inflicted on humanity. Biblically, in Israel's history, the trumpet often served as an immediate warning of imminent war, death, and destruction. It also recalls the intimidating blast that grew in intensity as the Ten Commandments were about to be given, and the commands in Numbers 10 where the sound of a trumpet directed the movement of tribes. Furthermore, there is a revealed insight among God's Family that a final trumpet will be blown, marking a critical moment of change and judgment, though the world remains unaware of the utter devastation that awaits until that sound is heard.
