Basic Doctrines: The Reward of the Saved

Bible Study by Earl L. Henn

God promised Abraham that in his Seed all the nations of the earth would be blessed, a spiritual promise that encompasses the life and work of Abraham's descendant Jesus Christ. The promises pertaining to salvation were first given to Abraham and his Seed, who is Christ, and were later extended to all whom God calls to salvation. Those who exhibit the faith and righteousness of Abraham become his spiritual descendants and therefore heirs of the same promises, including the inheritance of the earth. Jesus Christ will return to establish the Kingdom of God on earth, and His faithful followers, as co-heirs with Him, will receive positions of rulership under the King of kings. This reward involves teaching obedience to God's laws throughout the earth during the thousand-year reign and ultimately extends to governing the entirety of God's creation for all eternity as members of the God Family.

Hebrews (Part Two): Who Was Jesus?

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Jesus Christ is the promised Seed introduced in Genesis 3:15, where God declares enmity between the serpent and the woman along with her Seed, stating that He will bruise the serpent's head while the serpent bruises His heel. This He refers to the real Son of God, identified as the Messiah born as Jesus of Nazareth, who has become Savior, Teacher, Elder Brother, and King. The theme of the Son of God carries forward through prophecies such as Isaiah 11:1-4 and 11:10-11, which describe a Rod from the stem of Jesse upon whom the Spirit of the Lord rests in wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and fear of the Lord, enabling righteous judgment and the striking of the earth with the rod of His mouth. These passages confirm the identity of the one called the Son of God and tie the Seed directly to the establishment of family relationship with the Father. The apostle John further develops this by presenting the Word who was with God and was God from the beginning, through whom all things were made, who became flesh as the only begotten Son full of grace and truth, declaring the Father while remaining one with Him in character and eternal existence. This unique, ungenerated relationship sets Jesus Christ apart from all other uses of the term son of God in Scripture and equips Him to serve as the living pattern for those drawn by the Father to enter the New Covenant.

An Unchangeable Promise?

'Ready Answer' by Craig Sablich

Paul's exposition in Galatians 3:15-16 reveals that God's promise to Abraham was made specifically to a singular "Seed," not to seeds as many, but to one, "who is Christ." This identification is central to understanding the entire plan of God, because it means the covenant promise given to Abraham and the New Covenant established through Christ are one continuous, unbroken promise. Jesus Christ did not come to alter or replace what God swore to Abraham; He came to confirm it. As the true Heir of the promise, Christ became the first to receive the eternal inheritance, being called the Firstborn in Romans 8:29, Colossians 1:18, and Revelation 1:5. Hebrews 9:15 further clarifies His role as the Mediator of the New Covenant, through whom those who are called may receive the promise of eternal inheritance. This connects directly to the covenant God made with Abram in Genesis 15, where God alone passed between the divided animal pieces, signifying that the promise depended entirely on Him and not on Abram's performance. Because the covenant was one-sided and sealed by God Himself, it could never be annulled or amended, a truth Paul emphasizes by comparing it to the permanence of a confirmed human contract. The promise contained both physical and spiritual dimensions, land for Abraham's descendants and blessing for all nations, but its true essence was always an everlasting relationship with God, requiring resurrection for fulfillment since Abraham died without receiving it, as Hebrews 11:39 notes. The law given four hundred thirty years later at Sinai could not annul this earlier promise, as Paul states in Galatians 3:17. Christ's coming did not contradict or nullify the promise but fulfilled and confirmed it, particularly through His work as High Priest and perfect Sacrifice, which rendered the physical, ritual aspects of the Old Covenant obsolete while the eternal spiritual law remained. The significance of Christ as the Seed becomes personally relevant through Galatians 3:29, where Paul declares that those who belong to Christ become Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise. Through repentance, baptism, and receiving God's Spirit, believers are grafted into the same unchangeable promise originally given to Abraham. Romans 8:16-17 affirms that the Spirit bears witness that believers are children of God and joint heirs with Christ. Thus, Christ as the Seed serves as the link connecting Abraham's ancient faith to the New Covenant believer's inheritance, guaranteeing that the eternal inheritance promised long ago now belongs, through faith in Christ, to God's elect, to be fully realized when God's Kingdom is established on earth at Christ's return.
