Faith and the Christian Fight (Part Nine)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The heroes of faith, as highlighted in Hebrews 11:13, exemplify a profound commitment to living and dying in faith. These individuals, including Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and others, persevered through long periods of trial and testing, never receiving the promises during their lifetimes. Despite this, they died in faith, sustained by a deep belief in the reality of God and the assurances that came from His lips. Their faith was not merely intellectual; they embraced the promises with personal and possessive intimacy, making them an abiding part of their lives, guiding their daily conduct. Their confession as strangers and pilgrims on earth was evident in the way they lived, consistently submitting to God. They faced temptations and periods of doubt, yet over the span of their lives, they persisted in trusting God, achieving commendable endurance. This durability and constancy of faith allowed them to overcome the stresses and busyness of their times, even when events were beyond their control. They were persuaded of the promises, seeing them afar off, and did not stubbornly resist God's word with skepticism. Instead, they yielded with a childlike acceptance, drawing strength from their relationship with the One who made the promises. Their faith in Him made His words as precious as treasure, enabling them to make moral and spiritual choices, often at great personal cost, and to persevere through hardships. This intimate connection with God and His promises sanctified them from the world, marking them as separate, with their citizenship and inheritance elsewhere.
