What Happened During Jesus' 'Lost Years' (Luke 2:42; 3:23)?

Bible Questions & Answers

At the time Herod ordered the slaughter of young boys in Bethlehem, Joseph took Mary and Jesus and fled into Egypt. When the danger had passed, they returned and settled in Nazareth, a city in Galilee, fulfilling the prophecy that He shall be called a Nazarene. From Nazareth, they traveled yearly to Jerusalem for the Passover, and on one such occasion, when He was 12, Jesus stayed behind in the Temple before returning to Nazareth and being subject to His family. Jesus evidently spent most of His early years in Nazareth, as the townspeople recognized Him as a Nazarene. After He reached 30, He preached in the synagogue in Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and the people marveled at His words, identifying Him as Joseph's son. They also knew His family, including His mother Mary, and His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas, as well as His sisters, confirming that this was His own country. Clearly, Jesus spent most of the 18 years between ages 12 and 30 in Nazareth, where He was trained and studied.
