WHAT?! Me Submit to Someone Else?
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsIn the context of a society that resists being told no and rejects submission to authority, God is creating a Family of sons and daughters who will willingly submit to Him and to each other in service, praise, and eternal reign in His Kingdom. The principle of submitting to one another in the fear of Christ, as emphasized by the apostle Paul, is a fundamental duty for those filled with the Holy Spirit, contrasting sharply with the world's self-assertive nature. Specifically, regarding parents, children are instructed to obey their parents in the Lord, for this is right. This directive is not merely a command but is framed within the broader context of mutual submission among believers, reflecting a spiritual order and unity that mirrors the relationship within God's Family. This obedience to parents is to be carried out in the fear of Christ, ensuring that the motive behind such submission is to honor Him and reflect His teachings in all relationships.
Parenting (Part 4): Discipline
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughParenthood is a partnership with God, involving the shaping of human character and destiny alongside the Creator. The fundamental purpose of parenting is to mold godly character in children, aiming for their inclusion in the Kingdom of God. This high goal necessitates methods that align with God's will and Word, the ultimate authority for godly childrearing. Submission is key to harmonious family life, requiring mutual submission among family members in the fear of God. Fathers must submit to God the Father and Jesus Christ as their Head, ensuring their concern for the family remains godly and not authoritarian. This mutual submission, as outlined in Ephesians 5:21, underpins family behavior, emphasizing that even within this atmosphere, parental authority remains the divinely ordained chain of command. Parental authority, rooted in the fifth commandment as reiterated in Deuteronomy 5:16, holds significant importance to God, placed directly after commandments pertaining to Him. It promises long life and well-being to those who honor their parents. Proper respect for parents conditions children to respect other authority figures and ultimately prepares them to submit to God the Father, providing a strong foundation for spiritual relationships and blessings. Children are required to obey their parents in the Lord, meaning they should obey as long as the commands align with what is right, as if obeying Christ Himself, and because it is the will of the Lord. This obedience, coupled with honor, is validated by Jesus Christ and Paul in the New Testament, reinforcing its importance in family life. Parents must establish their authority clearly, ensuring their word is law within the household. Rules must be kept, and children should learn to seek permission and keep parents informed of their actions. This control is essential to produce the character God desires in children, though it should diminish as the child grows and proves responsible behavior. Without such authority, coupled with godly love, parenting risks becoming authoritarian and abusive, lacking the outgoing concern for the child's long-term eternal good.
