The Model Prayer (Part Four): Your Kingdom Come

Bible Study by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Jesus' ministry heralded the central message that the Kingdom of God is at hand, a proclamation first echoed by John the Baptist in the wilderness. This concept of the Kingdom is not merely a future event or a specific location, but encompasses the reign and rule of God wherever and whenever it is in effect. It signifies not only a geographical domain but also the authority and sovereignty of God to govern. For those called in this age, the Kingdom is a present reality, as they come under Christ's rule in this life, experiencing an immediate entrance into this divine realm opened by the Father. When praying "Your kingdom come," a person expresses hope and desire for God's direct rule, aligning with His purpose. This petition acknowledges God's inevitable sovereignty and seeks the continuation of His purpose in the individual and others He calls. It also voices a longing for world events to hasten the return of Christ to establish His Kingdom on earth, yearning for the end of the current evil system and the arrival of a new world of goodness and peace under God's dominion.
