Am I My Brother's Keeper?

Sermon by Bill Onisick

As stewards, we are called to tend, work, serve, and keep, guard, and protect all that God has placed into our care, with His most prized possession on earth being the Body of Christ, His future eternal Family. Each of us is a gift to one another, hand-selected by God to grow and mature together into His image. Our accountability as stewards over these relationships requires us to build up God's Family with fervent, sacrificial love, enabled by His Spirit, which we receive through our relationship with Him. However, differences among us often create friction and tension, leading to hurt feelings and mistakes. Without God's Spirit, we cannot overlook these faults or see the potential He sees in each of us. We must be hospitable without grumbling, using every gift, possession, and word to serve and build up the church, as this is the essence of faithful stewardship. Reflecting on Cain's story in Genesis 4, we see the failure of stewardship in human relationships. Cain's prideful jealousy and envy led him to murder his brother Abel, revealing a heart that did not acknowledge accountability to guard or protect. When God asked, "Where is your brother?" Cain's flippant response, "Am I my brother's keeper?" used the same word "keep" as in Genesis 2:15, meaning to hedge, guard, and preserve. Cain failed as a steward over his relationship with Abel, showing no responsibility to watch over him. In Matthew 25, Jesus Christ emphasizes that our stewardship over relationships within the Body of Christ is central to judgment. The faithful steward serves the least of His brethren, and in doing so, serves Him directly. Neglecting even one person equates to neglecting Jesus Christ Himself. God asks us, "Where is so-and-so? Why have you alienated them? Why have you murdered them with your thoughts and words?" Ultimately, He is asking why we have not served Him in their time of need. As stewards, we must use every action and word to build up His church, guarding and protecting each other. Our faithful service to our brethren, enabled by God's Spirit through our relationship with Him and Jesus Christ, is the true sign of our stewardship and determines our reward of eternal life in the Kingdom.
