Jesus in the Feasts (Part Two): Firstfruits
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughOn the Day of Pentecost, the concept of firstfruits is central, revealing Jesus Christ as the preeminent Firstfruit. Paul in I Corinthians 15:23 plainly states, "Christ the firstfruits," establishing Him as the initiator and epitome of God's spiritual harvest through His resurrection. This signifies that Christ, as the first of the firstfruits, successfully fulfilled the type of the harvest's firstfruit, opening the way for others whom God calls and chooses to be resurrected to spirit and glory in His image as firstfruits. The Old Testament, particularly in Leviticus 23, illustrates this through the wave sheaf offering and the Pentecost offering, where both the wave sheaf of barley and the two wave loaves of wheat are called firstfruits to the Lord, symbolizing a period of harvest initiated by Christ and completed with His followers. Christ is not only first chronologically but also in quality, being without sin, unlike the subsequent firstfruits represented by the wave loaves baked with leaven, symbolizing corruption that must be purified. As Colossians 1:15 describes Him as the "prototokos," first in preeminence, authority, and privilege, He stands as the model Firstfruit on Pentecost, the standard that the elect must emulate. James 1:18 further connects this idea by calling the church a kind of firstfruits of His creatures, and Revelation 14:4 identifies the 144,000 as firstfruits to God and to the Lamb, indicating they are of the same kind as the original Firstfruit, though subordinate and removed in time. The church, as a kind of firstfruits, is called to follow Christ's example, to walk as He walked, and to imitate His life of righteousness and holiness. Through His role as the trailblazer, Christ has forged the path to the Kingdom of God, guiding His followers to stay on this trail through His example and the aid of the Holy Spirit, dispensed by Him as High Priest. On Pentecost, the focus remains firmly on Christ as the center, the One who makes it possible for the church to become firstfruits by abiding in Him, emulating Him in all things, and striving to reach the stature of the perfect man in His image.
