'What Do You Seek?'

Sermon by Mark Schindler

Seeking God is a journey marked by a deep desire to align with His will, often beginning with personal motivations that must evolve into a selfless pursuit. Initially, the quest may stem from a wish to improve oneself, as seen in the attempt to become better within a familiar religious framework, only to realize the need for a different path. This search for God transcends mere affiliation with any group, driven by a longing to understand and follow His true way, even when it requires abandoning long-held prejudices or personal conveniences. The reasons for seeking God are challenged by Jesus Christ Himself with the profound question, "What do you seek?" This inquiry, directed to His followers, urges a daily reflection on whether the pursuit is for personal gain or truly aligned with God's purpose. Many sought Him for temporary satisfaction, like the multitudes following for physical nourishment rather than spiritual enlightenment, missing the deeper significance of His miracles as signs of His identity as the Messiah. True seeking must move beyond self-serving desires—whether for healing, curiosity, or escape from worldly chaos—to a commitment to believe in Him whom the Father has sent, embracing the eternal sustenance He offers as the bread of life. Scriptural guidance emphasizes this pursuit, as in I Chronicles 16:11, where the call is to "Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face evermore!" The Hebrew terms darash and baqash underline a diligent inquiry and a heartfelt desire to enter a covenant relationship with God, seeking His presence and direction continually. This seeking is not static but requires growth beyond initial, often self-centered motivations, towards a mature, outgoing concern for others, mirroring Christ's example. Jesus Christ, even as a youth, exemplified this dedication by prioritizing His Father's business over personal or familial concerns, teaching that seeking God involves a lifelong commitment to His will, no matter the cost. As the Passover approaches, self-examination is crucial to ensure that the search for God aligns with His purpose, striving to live in harmony and mutual concern within the body of Christ, always aiming to please the Father.
