The Foolishness of Bias
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsA false dichotomy, also called "Black or White" reasoning, is one of the fallacies of human reasoning. It considers only the extremes and forces an issue with many aspects into just two sides, neglecting the shades of gray and the middle ground. People tend to describe things as up or down, left or right, black or white: you either like it or you do not. Politics shows this in the conservative and liberal parties, Democrats and Republicans, where the media sweep aside any independent trying to break in. Marriages suffer from it when one spouse says, "Either you love me, or you don't." The same reasoning appears in the question of divorce and remarriage, where people say divorce is allowed in every case or in no case, always dealing in extremes. Such thinking comes from human bias, not from the patient, balanced weighing of evidence that marks the wise. The wise person listens to the evidence on both sides, looks at the subject from every angle, and tests it against God's eternal principles. Human reasoning that is wise in its own eyes drives people apart and is at enmity with God and His truth.
