The Four Horsemen (Part Five): The Pale Horse

'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The fourth horseman of the Apocalypse, as described in Revelation 6:8, is named Death, with Hades, the grave, following closely behind. Death, often through pestilence, and the grave are inseparable, both representing a state of lifelessness and corruption, a separation from the living and from God. Power is given to the Four Horsemen over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, hunger, death, and by the beasts of the earth. This authority likely summarizes the destructive roles of all four horsemen, as they form a distinct set of calamities that act as a prelude to even greater judgments. The inclusion of death by wild beasts fits within this progression of catastrophes, as severe war, famine, and disease lead to depopulation, disrupting the balance between human civilization and wildlife, thus increasing the threat of animal attacks. God uses these disasters, including the scourge of wild beasts, to judge mankind for disobedience, showing that such sorrows stem from rejection of Him. The Four Horsemen serve as reminders that He remains on His throne, executing judgment for sin.
