Then, as Egypt remained unyielding, He sent swarms of flies, followed by locusts that devastated their crops. These pestilences, while not life-threatening, brought misery and repulsion, making the Egyptians feel as though their skin crawled with torment.

Pestilence in history reveals both the devastation of disease and the wisdom of God's health laws given long before human science understood them. During the 14th century, bubonic plague swept across Asia, Russia, Persia, Turkey, North Africa, and Europe, killing as much as one-third of the European population and creating such chaos that mass graves became common, as seen even in the unmarked burials beneath Westminster Abbey. The Jewish physician Balavignus recognized that poor sanitation fueled the plague's spread, and when Jewish communities adopted cleanliness measures, their mortality rate dropped to only 5% of that among their neighbors. Rather than learning from this example, the surrounding population accused the Jews of poisoning wells, leading to massacres fueled by superstition and religious hysteria, and Balavignus himself was tortured into a false confession. Leprosy, another plague of the 13th through 16th centuries, was eventually controlled through national quarantine policies in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, dramatically reducing infection rates once segregation was enforced. False doctrine and heretical influence act like a spiritual infection that must be kept from contaminating the congregation.
