Jesus and the Feast (Part Two): Belief in the Spirit

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

On the last day, that great day of the Feast of Tabernacles, which is the seventh day, Jesus stood and cried out with a loud voice, offering an open invitation to salvation. He declared, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." This He spoke concerning the Spirit, which those believing in Him would receive, for the Holy Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified. During this significant moment, amidst thousands gathered in Jerusalem for the water ceremony—a highlight of the Feast where priests poured water on the altar while a choir sang of drawing water from the wells of salvation—Jesus revealed a far greater reality. He offered not just a measure of water, but rivers of living water gushing from the innermost being of believers, emphasizing that the Spirit is not to be contained but to flow out abundantly in loving service to others. The Feast of Tabernacles takeaway from this event is that it is a time of outflowing, overflowing service, using the gifts of God's Spirit to benefit others with a whole heart, reflecting the fruits of the Spirit in all interactions.

Teachings from Tabernacles

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by David C. Grabbe

The text notes that the Worldwide Church of God taught the events of John 7 took place on the final holy day, the 8th Day. In that view, the words of Christ foreshadowed the opportunity for salvation and the pouring out of God's Spirit during the Great White Throne judgment period after the Second Resurrection. A number of church of God groups now understand that this took place on the 7th day of the Feast rather than the holy day. The text states there was no water ceremony on the 8th Day. The culmination of the ceremony was on the 7th Day, so if Christ had spoken the words on the 8th Day, as formerly believed, it would not have made sense. The Jews never referred to the 8th Day as Hoshana Rabbah. The 7th day was the great day of asking for salvation. The text adds that if travel was required, people would remain in their booths another day because the 8th Day is not a travel day.

Be Strong and Work

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by David C. Grabbe

While the returned Judean exiles prioritized their own houses over building the temple, we should understand that it is always time to work on God's house.
