God's Kingdom in the Parables (Part Two): Tares, Mustard Seed, and Leaven

'Prophecy Watch' by David C. Grabbe

The Parable of the Mustard Seed, as presented in Matthew 13:31-32, illustrates the growth and corruption within the kingdom. Jesus spoke this parable to a great multitude, addressing the condition of the physical nation of Israel. The mustard seed, though small, grows into a large tree, symbolizing how Israel, increased by God's blessing, expanded but also fell into idolatry and demonic influences, as foretold by Moses in Deuteronomy 31:29. This corruption mirrors the consistent Old Testament theme of Israel's spiritual uncleanness, as the nation followed the world's course without the new heart and Spirit of the New Covenant. In Luke's account of the Parable of the Mustard Seed in Luke 13:18-21, the context further emphasizes Jesus' testimony against the kingdom's condition and its leadership. Spoken to the multitude after healing a woman bound by satan on the Sabbath, the parable highlights the nation's spiritual bondage and the perverse beliefs of its leaders. Their indignation at divine deliverance revealed hearts turned from their Creator, aligning with their spiritual captor, and underscored the corrupted state of the kingdom that Jesus addressed through this parable.
