Clouds (Part Two): God's Cloud as His Chariot

'Prophecy Watch' by Charles Whitaker

God enwraps Himself in His own cloud, a magnificent and terrifying spectacle that discharges rain, fire, hail, and smoke. From this cloud, He reveals His secrets to some according to His sovereign will, while hiding Himself from others by the same purposeful will. His cloud serves both to conceal and to facilitate revelation, ensuring His presence is felt even as it obscures enough of His glory to protect humans from destruction. At the Transfiguration, the cloud hides God to shield the disciples from the overwhelming brightness of His glory, while also providing the opportunity for the Father to reveal the paramount importance of His Son's words. In Psalm 18:11, David poetically describes God making darkness His secret place, with a canopy of dark waters and thick clouds cloaking Him. Through His cloud, God exercises His prerogative to conceal or reveal as He deems fit, maintaining His presence and glory within it.
