Jesus Christ's Ascension

Sermon by David C. Grabbe

Jesus Christ ascended on the 40th day and was brought with the clouds of heaven before the Ancient of Days. Dominion and glory and a kingdom were given to Him. He sat down at the right hand of God and was told to sit there until His enemies are made His footstool. This enthronement established His dominion and kingdom in an official sense. He was granted the place of honor at the Father's right hand and rules with Him. As heir of all things He holds a position far above every principality and power. The scroll in the Father's right hand represents the title deed to all things. Jesus Christ is worthy to take the scroll and thereby to redeem all things and inherit the whole creation. The opening of its seals represents steps in the process of making His enemies His footstool. His dominion involves both kingship and priesthood combined in one person as the Priest on His throne.

Dominion and Glory and a Kingdom

'Prophecy Watch' by David C. Grabbe

Jesus Christ declared to the Jewish leadership that from that time they would comprehend the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and arriving on the clouds of heaven. His statement drew upon Psalm 110:1 and the inset vision of Daniel 7. In the latter passage the Son of Man arrives before the Ancient of Days rather than returning to earth. Upon that arrival He receives dominion, glory, and a Kingdom. The ascension of Jesus Christ fulfilled the vision. At that moment He was invested with authority over all things. The apostle Peter later cited the same psalm to explain the events of Pentecost, showing that God had exalted Jesus Christ to His right hand. Subsequent miracles performed in the name of Jesus Christ confirmed that the exalted Son of Man now exercised divine power. Stephen likewise testified that he saw the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God. The apostle Paul writes that God raised believers together with Christ and made them sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Thus the church shares in the position of the One who already possesses glory and dominion forever.
