• Ecclesiastes 1:2-4
  "Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher;
  "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity."
  What profit has a man from all his labor
  In which he toils under the sun?
  One generation passes away, and another generation comes;
  But the earth abides forever.
  
   
• Ecclesiastes 1:17-18
  And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.
  For in much wisdom is much grief,
  And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

  I said of laughter—“Madness!”; and of mirth, “What does it accomplish?” I searched in my heart how to gratify my flesh with wine, while guiding my heart with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the sons of men to do under heaven all the days of their lives.

  Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done
  And on the labor in which I had toiled;
  And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind.

  Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind. Then I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me. And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity. Therefore I turned my heart and despaired of all the labor in which I had toiled under the sun. For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his heritage to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. For what has man for all his labor, and for the striving of his heart with which he has toiled under the sun?
   
• Ecclesiastes 4:2-7
  Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead,
  More than the living who are still alive.
  Yet, better than both is he who has never existed,
  Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun. Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.
  The fool folds his hands
  And consumes his own flesh.
  Better a handful with quietness
  Than both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind. Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun:
  
   
• 1 John 2:15-17
  Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
