An Acceptable Gift

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

In the worship of God, the act of giving a gift or making an offering holds deep significance, though its physical value is merely a token of the cost borne by the offerer. While an offering must represent a personal sacrifice to be accepted, God is not concerned with its monetary worth. He sets strict standards for the unblemished quality of the gift and its source, ensuring it reflects purity and righteousness. Even an offering of immense scale would be meaningless if it fails to meet His requirements, becoming nothing more than a hollow gesture. The true value lies in the heart behind the gift, for God desires faithfulness and obedience above all. To obey is better than sacrifice, and righteousness surpasses mere offerings. A gift brought with wicked intent is an abomination to Him. Moreover, Jesus Christ teaches that any gift brought to God must be preceded by reconciliation with a brother who holds a grievance against us. We are called to take the first step, humbling ourselves and seeking to understand the other's perspective, even at the cost of vulnerability. This act of reconciliation, reflecting a broken and contrite heart, is of far greater worth to God than any material token. He values justice, mercy, and humility in our walk with Him, and these qualities must shape our approach to both our offerings and our relationships. The heart's intent, shown through our willingness to sacrifice pride for the sake of peace, mirrors the attitude God seeks in every gift we bring before Him.

What Is an Offering?

Sermonette by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Holy for the Lord

Sermonette by Martin G. Collins

Incense symbolizes the prayers of the saints. Our offerings, as our prayers, should remain holy for the Lord, exuding a fragrant aroma.

The Offerings of Leviticus (Part Two): The Burnt Offering

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

The burnt offering is completely consumed on the altar. This type of offering teaches us about Christ's total dedication to God—and how we should emulate it.
