God, Satan, and David's Numbering of Israel

'Prophecy Watch' by David C. Grabbe

The concept of God as Adversary emerges in the intricate interplay between divine will and human action, revealing a reality beyond human comprehension. The incident of King David's numbering of Israel illustrates this dynamic, where both God and Satan are implicated in influencing David. In I Chronicles 21:1-2, it is stated that Satan moved David to conduct the census, while II Samuel 24:1 indicates that God's anger against Israel prompted Him to incite David. This duality underscores God's sovereignty, extending even over rebellious beings, as He uses them to accomplish His purposes, much like He utilized deceptive spirits to bring about Ahab's fall or employed fierce men as instruments of punishment. God's role as Adversary is further highlighted in His provocation of David, not to cause sin, but to reveal the sin already present in David's heart. Although the census itself was not inherently sinful, the irregularity in its execution—omitting the required ransom—reflected David's self-reliance and neglect of God's instructions. God's action in moving David to number Israel brought to light David's underlying motivations of military might and personal ambition, sins that existed before the act. By opening the way for this sin to manifest, God enabled David to recognize how far he had strayed, initiating a path toward healing and restoration. Moreover, God's judgment as Adversary extends beyond the individual to the collective, as seen when He punishes Israel for David's actions with a devastating plague that claimed 70,000 lives. Despite David's plea that the people were innocent, God's anger against the nation suggests a deeper issue, possibly tied to David's earlier mishandling of the Gibeonites. His unsearchable judgments demonstrate that He views sin and responsibility in ways beyond human understanding, holding a nation accountable for the failings of its leader. Through these events, God's role as Adversary serves to expose, correct, and ultimately restore, as evidenced by David's rededication through offerings, seeking renewed fellowship with God at the future site of the Temple.

God, Satan, and David's Numbering of Israel

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

An apparent contradiction exists between I Chronicles 21:1 stating that Satan moved David to take the census while I Samuel 21:1 says that God did.

Amos (Part Six)

Sermon/Bible Study by John W. Ritenbaugh

The favorite-son status of Israel was conditioned on accepting the terms of the covenant with God. Israel, then and now, has placed her trust in material things.

Amos (Part Five)

Sermon/Bible Study by John W. Ritenbaugh

Modern Israel cannot see the connection between its own faithlessness to the covenant and the violence of society that mirrors her spiritual condition.

Lamentations (Part Four; 1989)

Sermon/Bible Study by John W. Ritenbaugh

The prophets and the religious leaders bear the greatest blame for the destruction by providing a quasi-religion and not teaching the Law of God.

Amos (Part Four)

Sermon/Bible Study by John W. Ritenbaugh

Amos, like a circling hawk, makes dire pronouncements on all of Israel's enemies but reserves the harshest judgment for Israel, who should have known better.
