The Problem with Pride

Sermon by Ryan McClure

Pride is a destructive force that distorts our perception of reality, inflating our thoughts of ourselves and our accomplishments, often leading us to believe we are above others or our God-given position. It is inherently self-centered, focusing on how we view and feel about ourselves, and can result in actions that condemn the prideful. The phrase "no pride, no problem" serves as a powerful reminder that removing pride from situations can eliminate the problems it creates. By taking pride out of our interactions and comparisons, we can focus on our own issues to overcome, rather than judging others or elevating ourselves above them. Pride moves us to step beyond the place God has created for us, puffing up our thoughts and leading to harmful actions. It can trick us into believing we don't need God, that we can rely on our own wisdom, as seen in various examples throughout history. Pride distorts our relationships with others and with God, causing false perceptions of ourselves and inhibiting spiritual growth. Without pride, we can acknowledge our need for God's guidance and recognize the reality of our state, allowing for honest self-reflection and growth. When pride is left unchecked, it can manifest into rage and other destructive behaviors, as it puffs up our opinions of ourselves in situations where humility is required. Applying "no pride, no problem" in moments when life doesn't go as expected, and humbly seeking what God wants us to learn, helps us navigate challenges successfully. Pride often leads to swift destruction, but the solution lies in humility, which counters the deadly and deceptive nature of pride. Ultimately, adopting a "no pride, no problem" perspective sets us up for success rather than failure, as we look to God for help and humility in every situation. By rooting out pride and embracing humility, we align ourselves with the example set by Jesus Christ, who demonstrated selflessness and service to others. As we remove pride from our lives, we can live with a clearer focus on spiritual growth and our relationship with God.
